Hope you all had a nice break! Today's assignment should be relatively simple. Using your class notes from the power point, the internets and/or any other reference you deem appropriate, define the following terms. You can be as broad or succinct as you would like, but please do provide what you feel to be an adequate definition.
1. Obstructed labor
2. Traditional birth attendant
3. Maternal mortality
4. Perinatal mortality
5. Anemia
6. Family planning
Due before class Wednesday, April 15. See you soon.

ReplyDeleteObstructed labor: giving birth for the canal is obstructed or some other medical issue has occurred.
ReplyDeleteTraditional Birth Attendant: (Midwife) One who assists the mother during childbirth.
Maternal mortality: Maternal death, or maternal mortality, also "obstetrical death" is the death of a woman during or shortly after a pregnancy.
Perinatal mortality: refers to the death of a fetus or neonate and is the basis to calculate the perinatal mortality.
Anemia: A medical condition where the red blood cells are quite limited, where the blood becomes very thin. Also the vitality of the person suffering lowers.
Family planning: A form of birth control, also implementing other techniques.
Obstructed labor is when medical attention is required to deliver a baby. Obstructed labor often results in a cesearian section. (www.whiteribbonalliance-india.org/definitions.htm)
ReplyDeleteA traditional birth attendant is a primary child birth care provider (like a midwife), whose skill has been acquired through experience delivering babies or apprenticeship of another traditional birth attendant.
Maternal mortality- the number of maternal deaths measured per 100,000 births, including deaths related to pregnancies and not ending in births.
Perinatal mortality- the number of child deaths occurring late in pregnancy, during birth, or within the first 7 days of life, measured per 1000 live births.
Anemia occurs when there are too few red blood cells in a person’s body. As red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the rest of the body. Anemia causes fatigue and subsequent stress on organs, and is caused by blood loss, inability to produce adequate numbers of red blood cells, or the destruction of red blood cells.
Family planning- many factors play a part in the absence or acceptance of successful family planning. Technically defined, family planning is the control and purposeful use of reproduction (use of contraceptives or intentional disuse of them), which is gained through education, resources, and the availability of familial and social support.
1. Obstructed labor: when a baby cannot be delivered without medical intervention, often requires a caesarean section
ReplyDelete2. Traditional birth attendant: someone who helps with birthing but is not medically trained, such as a midwife; most commonly found in developing countries
3. Maternal mortality: death of a woman during or soon after pregnancy
4. Perinatal mortality: death of a fetus or neonate (a baby four weeks old or younger)
5. Anemia: a deficiency of red blood cells
6. Family planning: various methods used to control the number, spacing, and timing of pregnancies
1. Obstructed labor- difficulty in the labor due to either the mother, the fetus or a combination of the two.
ReplyDelete2. Traditional birth attendant- provide care for the mother and her newborn during and directly after childbirth. Generally not licensed or certified, but trained by apprenticeship to a midwife or such.
3. Maternal mortality- number of maternal deaths per 100,000 births. Including deaths related to pregnancies
4. Perinatal mortality-number of perinatal deaths per 1000 live births (when the baby dies soon after birth). Usually due to late birth or early birth.
5. Anemia- lack of iron in the blood, making a person pale or faint.
6. Family planning- ability/option to control reproductive rights. Ability to use education, keep your family rights, and control your own life when it comes to family. family planning requires no social pressure and is needed worldwide.
1. Obstructed labor- A labor in which delivery is prevented by mechanical factors. Delivery often requires Cesarean section.
ReplyDelete2. Traditional birth attendant- A person who is not medically trained who is often called on to help during childbirth in a community.
3. Maternal mortality- Death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of the pregnancy from any cause related the pregnancy.
4. Perinatal mortality- number of perinated death (child) per 1,000 live births. Includes deaths during late pregnancy, birth, and first seven days of life.
5. Anemia- not having the slandered amount of red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood. This will cause the oxygen carrying capacity to decrease.
6. Family planning Programs designed to assist the family in controlling reproduction by either improving or diminishing fertility.
1. Obstructed labor- A labor were the cervix does not dilate, making it extremely difficult for the baby to come out. This creates difficult births that lead to maternal and child mortality. Malnutrition is a direct cause of obstructed labor because a women will be too small to give birth.
ReplyDelete2. Traditional birth attendant- is the same as a midwife, an mainly uncertified health worker who helps deliver babies. Many believe that maternal health could be seriously improved if all births were overseen by TBA’s.
3. Maternal mortality- deaths related to pregnancies not ending in births. This is measured by per 100,000.
4. Perinatal mortality- the number of prenatal deaths of a baby per 1000 live births. This includes deaths during late pregnancy, during birth and the first seven dives of life.
5. Anemia- A disease where there is a deficiency of red blood cells in a person’s body. In many cases this is because they have an iron deficiency. This creates a lack of oxygen in the blood stream. The main symptom of anemia is fatigue. Anemia is most common among pregnant and new mothers because they have lost blood in childbirth and menstruation.
6. Family planning- education, counseling, and help provided to families and couples who want to decide when to have kids. This includes education and access to forms of contraception, and overall empowers women and sometimes men to decide how to make their family.
1. Obstructed Labor- the delivery of a baby that requires surgery (Cesarian Section.)
ReplyDelete2. Traditional Birth Attendant- A person who assists the mother during labor, by helping deliver the baby.
3. Maternal Mortality- The death of a mother within 42 hours of giving birth per 100,000 live births.
4. Perinatal Mortality- The number of perinatal deaths per 1000 live births. Related to deaths occurring late pregnancies, during birth, and the first 7 days of life.
5. Anemia- The lack of red blood cells in the blood.
6. Family Planning- Programs made to regulate family sizes with the proper use of birth control.

Obstructed labor: when the delivery of a baby can't occur without medical intervention
ReplyDeleteTraditional birth attendant: a midwife - usually a community member who has been apprenticed (not formally medically trained) who assists a mother during pregnancy and childbirth
Maternal mortality: the death of a woman due to issues relating to pregnancy
Perinatal mortality: the death of the baby - either a pregnancy resulting in a stillborn child, or the death of a live-born baby shortly after birth
Anemia: deficiency in red blood cells, makes people tired
Family planning: the use of birth control so that children are planned- also a strategy to limit family size/population growth

Olivia- this is the blog post from when I was absent Monday and Tuesday of this week.
ReplyDelete1. Obstructed labor- when the baby is caught somehow and cannot be born, for example the head is too large for the mothers pelvis
2. Traditional birth attendant- trained like a midwife, often a solution in foreign countries. easy to implement into society
3. Maternal mortality-when the mother dies due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth.
4. Perinatal mortality the ratio of failed pregnancies resulting in infant mortality to the total number of births.
5. Anemia- an iron deficiency in the blood when the hemoglobin has trouble transferring oxygen.
6. Family planning- birth control and educational programs to regulate birthrates.
